Mysterious track ‘Slowly’ was produced by a trio called Dropout
A month ago the popular EDM YouTube station, Proximity, uploaded an anonymous track called “Slowly” to its 1.7 million followers. Shortly thereafter it was all over reddit before being picked up by blogs speculating about who was behind the catchy single. Some even attributed the track to the mysterious ZHU, despite the fact that it sounds absolutely nothing like the LA-based producer’s work.
But clicks are clicks and plays are plays and Big Beat’s newest signees have quickly rose to prominence thanks, in part, to their marketing efforts. A trio by the name of Dropout comprised of Ethan Davis, Ray Nowak and Selden Cummings, are the producers behind the latest marketing “mystery” to use the blogosphere to generate their buzz. Make no mistake, the track itself warrants attention despite the fabricated hoopla — “Slowly” is colorful, catchy and exceptionally-produced with just the right amount of bounce to make a room move — but we can’t help but think the whole “mystery producer” shtick is way past its prime.
