Deadmau5 experiments with a bass guitar in his rework of ‘Are You Not Afraid?’

Deadmau5 has always been an advocate of using live instruments in music production. Whether recording with a piano or a vintage synthesizer, his use of these instruments play a significant role in the quality of his music and allow it to stand out among multitudes of songs produced entirely on a computer. In his latest experiment, Deadmau5 has added the bass guitar to his musical repertoire. Using a simple two-bar riff on the bass, he transformed “Are You Not Afraid?” from liquid dubstep to a hip-hop piece. The combination of the bass-driven melody along with record-scratching samples transport the listener back to the 1990s when this type of sound-scape was prevalent in hip-hop classics of the era. Experimenting in yet another style of music and succeeding once again proves that despite his reputation as an internet troll, Deadmau5 is actually one of the more talented producers currently in the scene.
