Astronomar – Magic Potion EP
Throughout July, Astronomar released his Magic Potion EP one track at a time, rewarding devout fans with a week-long free download of each single. Now the full EP is available via his Main Course imprint. The four songs stay true to the Astronomar hallmark: deeply bizarre, almost perplexing compositions that seem to be codified by frivolity.
The EP opens with “How We Live,” a collaboration with Wuki that combines sub-heavy beats, ballooning synths, and G-House vocals to set the tone with a pervasive, club-ready energy.
Arguably the strongest track in the quartet, “Earth Tones” relies on simplistic, eery melodies, washed with heavy reverb and staticky bass to “[harness] the ancient vibrations of our mother planet.”
“Sliver” treads the line between acid house and tech house, offering jaunty rhythms and lysergic, quacking horns. The end result is an oddball opus with hints of Green Velvet, TJR, and Boys Noize.
The EP closes out with “Starekase,” a track that mirrors its title aptly, characterized by minimal, glitchy bass and staccato synths continually ascending a sonic staircase.
