DA Premiere: Paul Kalkbrenner sits down with Grammy Pro to discuss his new album ‘7’
As part of Grammy Pro’s effort to shed light on modern day musicians of all genres, the organization targeted a rather unlikely candidate: native Berliner, Paul Kalkbrenner. Revered as one of Germany’s finest live techno acts, Paul speaks to Grammy Pro about how he got his foot in the door, and his tendency to create instrumental music as he “never liked working with vocals because they always come so on top of everything else.” Even more impressively, Paul explains how humbled he was to be asked by his own country to perform at Brandenburger Gate in honor of the tearing down of the Berlin Wall.
On his 7th studio album, titled 7 (out today – August 7th), Kalkbrenner comments, “To me, [the music] becomes more and more unique. And therefore, it gets harder to label it.”
In signing a long-term deal with Sony/Columbia, Paul marks the first artist to be granted access to Sony and Columbia Records – and the first to sample Jefferson Airplane to boot.
