Excision spins Band of Horses’ “Funeral” into a melodic masterpiece
A veteran of the dubstep community beloved for his heavy sound, Excision seen himself regularly in the spotlight over the past month and a half between both his highly-buzzed about Shambhala set and his address on the genre’s current state. Making this year’s Shambhala appearance one for the books, the Canadian national pulled out all the stops as he expertly mixed and mashed his most prized bass-sodden selections into a compilation of bass euphoria. His previously unreleased remix of Band of Horses’ classic, “Funeral,” stood out in the set for its melodic aura that showed a rare side to the bass king.
Finally seeing its release, this remix truly succeeds in amplifying both the emotional and cinematic moods of “Funeral” that made the original such a timeless song. Leaving the recognizable guitar melody and original vocals rather untouched, Excision respects the original’s leading elements yet he takes over the instrumental drop, injecting electrifying bass bursts and slashing percussion to let his larger-than-life sound shine through.
