GRiZ bids farewell to summer by releasing a chilled out free album
A retrospective consideration of Grant Kwiecenski’s career under the GRiZ moniker reveals two passions as firm motifs in his career: blending soothing jazz and instrumental funk with aggressive, over driven bass music, and challenging the commodification of electronic music through his fervent advocation for free-released music.
Kwiecenski has kicked off September with a strong application of his latter passion, by releasing a nine song album for free in a sudden premiere on Pigeons and Planes. He restrains a bit, however, from enacting the former passion in creating Chasing The Golden Hour, Pt. 1. GRiZ focuses on blending serene instrumental jazz with soothing, recognizable vocal samples, favoring velvet-smooth saxophones and warm piano loops to meaty LFO bass. On his website, Kwiecenski provides his mission statement for the album:
“I wanted to recreate the carefree good vibes you feel when it’s just about sunset on the perfect summer evening and everything is the most beautiful shimmering tint of gold. Chasing The Golden Hour is that magical moment, it is the cool breeze against your back, it is sweet summer swagger in music form. Enjoy the chilled out vibes :)”
On the album’s conclusive track, “The Moment Seizes Us,” GRiZ briefly returns to his stylistic bass-infused staple, interrupting his tranquil melodies with an upbeat electronically infused closing drop.
The album’s title suggests that it is the first installment of a series, so perhaps his choice to end on a high-energy note indicates that part two of Chasing will return to his standard electro-funk fare. Either way, his generous goodbye to the summer season is greatly appreciated.
