Maelstrom & Louisahhh!!! launch ‘RAAR’, a ‘punk rock label for techno-heads’
Maelstrom and Louisahhh!!! are household names to anyone versed in the French techno scene. Ubiquitous to Zone Records and Brodinski’s Bromance imprint, the frequent collaborators have teamed up to release their own label, RAAR, which they categorize as “a techno label for punk rockers, a punk rock label for techno-heads.” Given the consistent compatibility of techno and punk rock as genres, the pair’s idea is inherently a wise concept. However, the two producers increase interest in their label by transcending standard label expectations.
According to FactMag, “Each RAAR release will be pressed to vinyl in collaboration with The Vinyl Factory. Digital releases will be pay-what-you-want offerings that feature assorted open source material, including beat-a-pellas, acapellas, instrumentals and sound banks. Plus, each release will be tied to a piece of art, a poem, a story or a photograph — a true gesamtkunstwerk.'”
The pay-as-you-please model and inclusion of bonus features promotes the founders’ advocacy for other DJs and producers, while their implementation of the “Gesamtkunstwerk” notion is a motif that will achieve major critical success if utilized effectively. For the non-German, “Gesamtkunstwerk” translates to “total work of art,” and lends the prefix to Gesaffelstein’s moniker. Louisahhh!!! and Maelstrom’s stance on musical commodification and artistic rendering of a label strongly indicate their that their interest in artistry supersedes their interest in capital gain. RAAR’s first release, RAAR001 is slated for a November release date and will feature music from both founders as well as the group Roijacker.
