Clarian – Fear and Self Loathing (Original Mix)
Guy Gerber’s Rumors imprint has become a breeding ground for truly intuitive techno that stands for far more than an overzealous artist imprint. It first welcomed North American prospect and prior Gerber collaborator Clarian to its ranks back in 2014, setting the label hopping producer on a course that has since seen him call both Anjunadeep and Turbo Recordings home. That was all a test though, for it’s the Fear and Self Loathing EP that really shows where Clarian is filling a vital void in the left-of-field club space.
It’s title-track breezes through trippy yet leathery layers of percussive play and warped melodies, building and blooming in a way that was made for the busier hours of the night. Though completely functional, Clarian’s unique blend of weird and wired techno still feels reassuringly artistic, all whilst keeping with that infamous Rumors mantra of letting vital next generation talent find a voice under its reliable musical umbrella.
