JoJo – When Love Hurts (Sweater Beats Remix)

In 2015, flipping pop tracks of yesteryear with dance sensibilities has often proved successful, if not always inspired, for electronic artists. Sweater Beats‘ remix of JoJo’s single “When Love Hurts” is not such a case.

JoJo dominated charts more than a decade ago with precocious ballads like “Leave (Get Out)” and “Too Little Too Late.” In August of this year, she released her debut EP on Atlantic Records following the termination of a constricting record contract. Most pop vocals remixed for dance tracks are are extensively transformed by a producer, sometimes to a barely-recognizable degree. JoJo, in contrast, exhibits a matured voice that seems more attuned to an R&B-touched future track like Sweater Beats’ rework than to Top 40 radio. The Filipino artist’s characteristically-sleek production imbues the track with fresh future and trap elements. The final result is catchy without verging on saccharine, and undeniably 2015.
