Jonas Rathsman – New Generation (Original Mix)
If there’s one thing to be learned from the reign of Swedish house heavyweight Jonas Rathsman, it’s that there really is an organic way for underground dance music to shine past the club floor without any sign of creative compromise. The man who has scaled such landmarks as ‘Tobago’ for DFTD and more recently ‘Wolfsbane‘ for Disclosure’s Method White imprint has come a long way since his earlier days as the French Express’s Swedish contingent. Rathsman now adds a new label to his list of cohorts in the form of a debut EP for KOMPAKT’s sister-label KX this month.
Rathsman’s deep and diligent brand of house music has seldom departed from its core melodic edge, and ‘New Generation’ does not look to dishonor this tradition in any way. Heavy-footed where the beats are concerned and ascending from a bed of murky wobbles to a more dreamy tier of chiming lead work, the track is the sort of blissful middle ground that makes functional club records ridiculously accessible without removing those blissfully edgy undertones.
Jonas Rathsman has had a couple of exceedingly good years, but the sound of ‘New Generation’ is that of the Swedish talent taking things to a new and welcome level in the name of intuitive and melodic house wizardry.
