‘Hotline Bling’ moves beyond being an internet meme with recent cover by Gallant and Sufjan Stevens
Halloween in Jersey City – a pleasant show headlined by newest “Weight In Gold” sensation Gallant is just getting started. The LA icon brought along indie crooner Sufjan Stevens as his support, who wowed the audience with his flawless falsetto and a mix of new and old crowd favorites. As his performance wound down, a familiar melody took over – none other than the internet’s favorite track “Hotline Bling” by Drake. Shortly after realizing what was to come, Gallant showed up on the stage earlier than expected to assist with the rendition.
The two made a brilliant pairing, with Stevens’ high-pitched voice wonderfully complemented by Gallant’s smooth one belting out parts of the chorus and verses. Accompanying the performance were large pictures of Drake on the LED screen and of course spot-on imitations of the Canadian rapper’s signature “Hotline Bling” moves seen in the original music video. Whether covered live or edited on the internet, there is hardly any contest to the track being almost a 2015 version of Psy’s “Gangnam Style.” Watch the full cover above.
