Jon Hopkins remixes Disclosure’s ‘Magnets’ into something beautiful
Jon Hopkins is a rare talent. His remixes tend to take on a life of their own, and his version of Disclosure’s “Magnets” is no different. Borrowing very few elements from the original — a few drum samples and vocal chops here and there — his rendition essentially constructs a brand new song altogether.
The driving force behind the rework is a multi-layered bass patch which pulses organically over Hopkins’ midtempo beat. The breakdown brings an arp-laden crescendo that changes tempo, bearing the kind of overt complexity we’ve come to expect from Hopkins’ material. All in all, it’s a fantastic remix, although we’d be more likely to classify it as a beautiful new Jon Hopkins original with a few samples from Disclosure.
