Diplo purchases stake in professional soccer team
Diplo is among a group of investors purchasing equity in Arizona’s professional soccer team, Arizona United Soccer Club. The producer’s management company, TMWRK Management, also purchased a minority stake, and thereby a spot on the team’s board of directors.
The three-year old Arizona United Soccer Club is part of the 29-team United Soccer League. The USL is integrated with Major League Soccer, and several MLS teams create USL franchises for reserve teams.
In a statement explaining his interest in investing in the team, Diplo said “I’ve been really fortunate to travel all over the world and experience different cultures through music. Wherever I am, Jamaica, Spain, England, China, etc., soccer is a social constant. I wanted to figure out a way to get involved with the game and team sports so when Arizona United presented itself, I immediately jumped at the opportunity. I see soccer the same way I see music, as a connective tissue linking the world’s cultures.”
Arizona United co-chairmen Kyle Eng and Brett Johnson affirmed his sentiments. “Diplo, throughout his music career as a DJ, Producer and Artist, has always been about global culture, youth culture and inclusiveness, and we couldn’t think of a better match to not only fit our core demographic, but to wrap our team around,” said Eng and Johnson in a statement. “The number of ways we can work together to grow the Arizona United SC brand is unlimited with a partner like Diplo.”
