New Technics 1200s will reportedly ship for $4,000
On January 5, Panasonic made history by reinstating their legendary line of turntables, the Technic 1200s. The revamped model, named the Grand Class Technics SL-1200G, brings a sleek new build design and improved internal functionality.
Now, tech blog What Hi-Fi has reported that the new units will ship for around $4,000 — double the cost of previous models. It’s a bold price jump, but Panasonic is promising it will be worth it, as the new line will be their most high-fidelity turntable yet. With its brass-top platter and core-less motor, the new design supposedly delivers less vibrations for an altogether smoother listening experience.
It is still unclear at this time whether the $4,000 price Panasonic have told What Hi-Fi refers to the limited edition Grand Class Technics SL-1200GAE, which will ship this summer, or the regular model which will arrive later in the year at a reduced price. Regardless, it’s a hefty price jump, and one that is sure to scare off many casual consumers and DJs.
