Apple Music to soundtrack the Met’s new fashion technology exhibition
Apple Music and New York’s The Metropolitan Museum of Art have entered a creative collaboration in which the former will soundtrack the iconic museum’s forthcoming exhibition, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”
Brian Eno’s Music for Airports will play in a continuous loop during the exhibit, which will explore the dichotomy between hand and machine-made haute couture, and how the two production methods can and should co-exist. Manus x Machina will question the notion of one method reigning supreme, and plans to present both styles as equal.
Andrew Bolton, the exhibition’s curator, divulged on why Music in Airports particularly stood out as the perfect fit: “It’s a mix between analogs and electronic sounds.” Further, the album was one of the first to be played out on Apple’s Beats 1 Radio upon Zane Lowe’s entry into Apple last year.
“One can’t help but wonder if haute couture would have emerged as a response of fear and the response of the democratic possibilities of the sewing machine. In the history of fashion, fear and clothing are connected through technology. There are times when the hand has been celebrated and the machine, denigrated, and vice versa.”
