DA Premiere: Sonya Kitchell – Mexico (Break Science Remix)
Break Science have remixed their frequent collaborator Sonya Kitchell and her single “Mexico” from her January 2016 release We Come Apart. The fellow Brooklynite had previously provided vocals on two tracks from the duo’s 2013 album, Seven Bridges.
A vintage-sounding intro sets the stage for Kitchell’s soft, sultry vocals to become the remix’s anchor. Break Science slows the tempo down from the original and mostly stays out of the way, surrounding Kitchell’s untouched voice with gentle, haunting plucks and subdued drums. Each subsequent verse adds more sonic elements, such as a sweeping synth, a buzzing bass to beef up the foundation, and, finally, an arpeggiated synth line dangling over the track’s titular refrain.
