Deadmau5 to play the A State of Trance stage at Ultra

Deadmau5 and Ultra have a delicate relationship, to say the least. His split from the label later gave way to plenty of brand-bashing from the producer through social media, culminating in his epic troll performance on the 2014 Ultra Miami mainstage. Joel Zimmerman was noticeably missing from the festival’s roster the following year.

It appears that the two have come to a tentative truce in 2016 based off of Ultra’s phase 2 lineup for March. Even more interesting is the fact that deadmau5 will be playing the A State Of Trance (ASOT) stage. Given Eric Prydz’s second round at ASOT Miami, some half-jokingly assert that his and Mau5’s progressive house styles contain more trance elements than most artists showcased under the banner. However, a majority of trance fans recall a particular spat between ASOT creator Armin Van Buuren and Zimmerman over summer of 2014:

Is his appearance on an ASOT actually an acceptance of Armin’s challenge? So far, most theorize this might be the case, which has led to a heated discussion around what we might expect from the Canadian. Jaded Mau5 fans note they wouldn’t be surprised if he pulled a stunt akin to that of 2014. Others are hopeful of a classics set filled with artists which Zimmerman mentioned in previous laments about missing trance, such as Art Of Trance or Union Jack. Meanwhile, one Facebook user on a trance page made a particularly accurate point that others agree with: in a way, the biggest troll Zimmerman could execute would be to play a set closer to the genre’s roots than most tracks featured on ASOT itself.
