Pretty Lights releases new track “Only Yesterday” with music video
It was only last week that Pretty Lights took to social media suggesting he was pursuing a new direction. Today, with no announcement, the producer born Derek Vincent Smith released the first track, with accompanying music video, that’s the product of his new vision.
Entitled “Only Yesterday,” the track will quickly assuage fans who are worried that the Colorado-native is taking a severe turn away from the sound that has thus far defined his career. The buoyant track relies more on sample-work than electronic elements — it brings to mind “Yellow Bird” from Pretty Lights’ last release A Color Map of the Sun — though that shouldn’t be a shock to fans.
The companion video, shot on location in Telluride, Colorado, switches between the bucolic countryside and Pretty Lights performing with his live-band. The video also plays up the track’s themes of friendship, highlighting numerous fans sharing the experience of Pretty Lights’ live show. “Only Yesterday” has only increased our anticipation for more new music from Pretty Lights.
