Bassnectar‘s production skill set is as varied as it is vast, but his primary output often takes on a yin and yang dynamic. Within his extensive array of sounds, Lorin Ashton is deftest at producing psychedelically-inspired melodic masterpieces and vitriolic cuts where his formidable bass conceptions assume the dominant role. The most recent unreleased Bassnectar track to circulate falls into the former category. Purported to be a collaboration with Texas-based producer Luzcid named “Science Fiction,” this yin-inspired composition broke into the public eye in January, when Bassnectar uploaded a time-lapse video with the song provided as a soundtrack.

While the aforementioned video highlights the mellifluous nature of the song, no context can do justice to the raw, bass-infused emotion that Bassnectar’s music evokes as well as a live setting. Now, a video of the song being played in a DJ set is available on Bassnectar’s subreddit. The video showcases “Science Fiction” as it exists in a live setting, and displays how crucial Bassnectar’s signature 808 synthesis is to the overall song. The broken beat energy of the percussion supplements the ambient beauty of the synthesis to culminate in a track that celebrates both Bassnectar’s yin and yang.
