The future is still up in the air for Space Ibiza
Since the news that classic club Space Ibiza would be changing hands next year, the internet rumor mill has been churning out speculation. Late last year, Space mainstay Carl Cox revealed that the club was going to be taken over by the owners of the island’s luxury resort, Ushuaïa.
In recent comments, Abel Matutes Prats, the CEO of Palladium Hotel Group which owns Ushuaïa, clarified some of the upcoming changes. Unlike the resort, Prats says, Space will not be turned into a shopping center or hotel.
“Obviously we want to keep it as a disco,” said Prats, “but we also want to dedicate it to the audience in which we are now focusing, which will be complementary to Ushuaïa.
Though Prats was candid about what Space won’t be, he kept mum on the possibilities of what the transition will yield when the club reopens its doors in Summer 2017. The island hot spot has been a glint in club canon for decades and it’s difficult to imagine the scene without it. Others like Cox have already written the change off as the outright end of an era.
“Next year, the club is no longer,” said Cox in a recent exclusive interview “and that’s a really massive shame.”
