Are the Gorillaz working with Vic Mensa on their upcoming album?

Impatient fans have been promised new Gorillaz material in 2016, and as each bread crumb detail about the album is revealed, anticipation continues to build on a steep, vertical trend. Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have teased a few photos and a small bit of studio footage throughout the recording process so far, drumming up speculation over every step of their third album’s creation. The next tantalizing detail comes from Remi Kabaka, known better by his fictional band alias as Russel Hobbs.

Kabaka shared a photo on Instagram featuring Chicago-based rap phenom Vic Mensa in the studio. Fueling further speculation, it appears the photo initially had the “No Chill” rapper tagged, though the tag was quickly removed, likely to keep the impending collaboration under wraps.

This won’t be Mensa’s first experience working with the animated outfit. Mensa filled in for Del The Funky Homosapien live on The Gorillaz’ 2001 classic “Clint Eastwood” at Governor’s Ball 2014. Now he may be coming back full-circle with the band, perhaps laying down his own bars this time on what is proving to be one of the most anticipated records of the year.
