Madeon hails Deadmau5’s mentorship in candidly drunk Twitter DMs
Amidst the waves of genuine controversy and dislike he frequently incites is a side of Deadmau5 many are quick to overlook. The contentious DJ has a history of mentorship, providing feedback and exposure for burgeoning artists. Amidst a string of hilarious EDM acronyms, he posted a screenshot of Twitter DMs he’d received from a candidly drunk Madeon celebrating their friendship.
Now that Madeon is an international festival staple, it’s easy to forget his humble beginnings as the bedroom DJ who’s first break was a Youtube mashup video. His remix of Deadmau5’s classic track “Raise Your Weapon” was his true launchpad, garnering the much needed buzz to make his breakout EP The City a success. Fellow mentees Rezz and SOFI were quick to jump into the love fest, adding their words of appreciation to the thread.
DJs like Zedd and Avicii have been candid about how mentorship from Skrillex and Laidback Luke respectively have been hugely influential in their personal careers. Though many of the larger EDM acts are now household names, the process of connection and mentorship harkens back to the origins of the form where DJs helped break new talent by playing their records and offering advice.
