[Updated] SoundCloud reportedly to implement new restrictions on DJ mixes

According to Digital Music News, SoundCloud is reportedly preparing to implement new restrictions on uploads of all DJ mixes. The nature of the limitations is still unclear, but the restrictions are expected to be significant, and could possibly include a complete block on all DJ mixes that are not fully cleared (which would constitute a majority of the mixes on the platform). An industry insider told Digital Music News that they “don’t think the DJs are going to be happy… Probably piss off a lot of subscribers too.”

SoundCloud has been in hot water in recent months for taking down the accounts of high-profile artists, often without warning or apparent cause. Recently-inked deals with major labels has only intensified the policing on the streaming site. SoundCloud currently counts 185 million active users, but the launch of the paid tier SoundCloud Go and major label partnerships indicates that the gratis nature of the service is drawing to a close. If SoundCloud’s reported restriction on mixes proves true, it would likely prompt an even greater shift to competitors like Mixcloud and Spotify.

UPDATE: A representative from SoundCloud has provided us with a statement regarding the rumor, denying the claim made by Digital Music News: “The story has no truth to it. At SoundCloud, we’re on a mission to create a place where all creativity can live. SoundCloud’s creator community, including DJs, is incredibly important to us.”
