New ‘family entertainment district’ stands as threat to Berghain

Berlin’s esteemed techno mecca, Berghain, may be under threat from a new “family entertainment district” that is being built across the street from the venue. The new development, which is set to encompass the Mercedes Benz Arena and surrounding areas, will contain a mall, a multi-lane bowling alley and other family attractions. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2018.

While Berghain is still in the clear, it remains to be seen whether the club will be migrating down the road. Considering the polarity between family-friendly complexes and nightlife, Berlin’s ongoing gentrification process will likely oust Berghain, as well as authentic Berlin nightlife, in the years to come.
