Listening party in Istanbul for Radiohead’s new album reportedly attacked; Radiohead responds

Yesterday, June 17, a local Istanbul record store, Velvet Indieground, was attacked by a group of radical Islamists for drinking alcohol and listening to music during Ramadan. Radiohead was holding a global listening party for their new album, A Moon Shaped Pool.

One redditor, who was there hosting the streamed, described the attack: “they were determined to kill us. we were beaten by more than 20 men with pipes in their hands, beer bottles were broken on our heads, i don’t even know how we made it out. i will share the details later guys. just hoping that noone will die.” The store was also destroyed in the process.

Radiohead have responded to the attack on the Istanbul listening party with the following:

“Our hearts go out to those attacked tonight at Velvet IndieGround in Istanbul. We hope that someday we will be able to look back on such acts of violent intolerance as things of the ancient past. For now, we can only offer our fans in Istanbul our love and support.”
