Flying Lotus to make directorial debut at Sundance Next Fest

Flying Lotus is set to make his directorial debut at this year’s Sundance Next Fest, a festival honoring film, music and independent artists. Having appeared at the festival last year for scoring Eddie Alcazar’s short film “FUCKKKYOUUU,” Steven Ellison’s return to Sundance Next is warmly received.

Titled Royal, Ellison describes his first film as “an awkward love story that’s definitely not for the kiddies.” Royal will be joined by another project of FlyLo’s, The Greasy Strangler, which he purports will be “the craziest double billing you’ll see this year.”

Ellison notes that he drew inspiration for the film a widely circulated gif of him DJing with Thom Yorke.  Ellison also tapped into disturbingly talented skills of animator David Firth, creator of the eternally unsettling “Salad Fingers” video series. Firth is also the first official signee to the film division of Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder.

At the festival, Ellison will be billed simply as “steve.”
