DA’s Sunday Morning Medicine: Volume 143

Sunday Morning Medicine is a feature from Dancing Astronaut dedicated to the mellower side of electronic music. We bring you our favorite therapeutic selections — old and new — in an attempt to alleviate the agonizing effects of a long weekend of partying.

1. Easing things in for Vol. 143 is “Doublespeak” from Soular Order. Hailing from Manchester, the producer crafts a hazy, atmospheric vibe with lingering guitar notes and slightly obscured bell sounds. Things are brought to a more energetic level by the introduction of more aggressive drums but the spacey, ambient feeling stays constant throughout.

2. SwuM. occupies the second spot with his new original “I’m srry.” Although an apologetic name, the track only contains traces of melancholy. A gentle vocal sample carries most of the track as a capacious, liquid foundation is set. Percussion shuffles the track along but it remains gentle and contemplative as it builds to conclusion.

3. Dallas’s Medasin brings a more lively, yet still very relaxed, entry for Vol.143’s halfway point. A collaboration with JOBA, “daydream” oscillates between minimal sections of vocals and synth patches to downtempo flourishes of languid futuristic waves and mallet lines.

4. Birocratic has made a few appearances in Sunday Morning Medicine and returns as a feature on Englewood’s “oldschool.” True to its title, a meandering hornline and copious samples, particularly ukulele and piano, combine with a bouncy bassline and shuffling drums to form a breezy, smile-inducing update on an old swing style.

5. Closing out Vol. 143 is a cooling number from SLIGHT. All of the synths in “Tangerines” have a tepid feel, whether they are plucked arpeggios, shifting swirls, or floating breezes. The percussion packs a punch, preventing the track from dragging, and adds a bit of warmth to an otherwise loose, rolling original.
