Flume – Lose It (Whereisalex Flip)
Released back in May, Flume’s sophomore album Skin exceeded expectations with its complex, intricately textured compositions and has undoubtedly become one of the most accomplished albums of the year. Normally, an album that significant and detailed would be a risky proposition for most remixers — but Whereisalex is not most remixers. The producer/visual artist behind last month’s phenomenal Internet Theory EP has thrown caution to the wind and given us his interpretation of “Lose It,” Skin’s bombastic future bass riot featuring verses from Vic Mensa.
More of a cover than a remix, Whereisalex takes the chords, rhythms, and musical ideas of “Lose It” and turns them into a glitchy, half-tempo behemoth. Starting with lush chords and cinematic textures, Whereisalex’s signature jazzy piano lines weave in and out between fluttering synths lines and powerful bass before the song closes out with some truly inspired sound design and melodic command. Whereisalex’s masterful musicality and approach to arrangement come through loud and clear, as he gives Flume a rework that finally matches its source material.
