Mat Zo blends trance and dubstep on ‘Revelation Crisis’
It appears Mat Zo has more gifts stashed in his inventory. Prior to unveiling Self Assemble, the former Anjunabeats star posted a bevy of tracks for download that he’d opted to leave out of his sophomore album. More recently, he gave away his remix to The M Machine’s “When It’s Gone.”
“Revelation Crisis” continues the streak, serving as an odd, albeit appealing mixture of classic trance influences and dubstep. Zo begins with a tense buildup populated by twisted saw-synth melodies, leading up to what one would imagine would be a symphony of 4/4 sounds before fooling listeners by diving deep into a titillating dubstep drop rife with heavy bass elements. The combination of sounds is as brash as it is intriguing, showcasing Mat Zo’s seamless ability to defy genres in the most eclectic of ways while still pulling off a polished finished product.
