Stream DJ Snake’s new album ‘Encore’

After teasing fans for months with singles and Snapchat previews, DJ Snake‘s debut album Encore has finally arrived. The title is a cheeky humble brag from the global superstar who has become a household name via tracks like “Turn Down For What” and “Lean On” without ever actually issuing a formal release.

At first listen, Encore is a sprawling effort with its finger in many pies. There are big room numbers like the Yellow Claw featuring “Ocho Cinco,” moody downtempo tracks like “Talk” with George Maple, and a pair of heavy hip hop tracks with Young Thug, Swizz Beats, Migos et al. The result is a somewhat bloated offering. Though when the pandering is pared away, a handful of great tracks remain.

Highlights from the LP include the highly infectious “Sober” which brings color to an ubiquitous gripe (“You never call me when you’re sober.”) with a bright Vampire Weekend-esque guitar lick. Bipolar Sunshine’s second album turn “Future Pt 2” is an electro garage fusion that channels classic Justice, while the Justin Bieber-featuring “Let Me Love You” will likely achieve rather immediate crossover success. Finally, album closer “Here Comes The Night” loops forgotten Kanye collaborator Mr Hudson’s synth heavy proclivities back into relevance. Like the last magical dance in a Brat Pack prom movie, the track sparkles with effervescent melancholy.

Ultimatelythe LP is a big summer crowd pleaser that is likely to simultaneously receive mainstream airplay and tickle fans across the genre spectrum. Encore is out now via DJ Snake Music/Interscope on iTunes.
