Listen to Claude VonStroke’s trippy new Barclay Crenshaw track, ‘The Gene Sequence’
Claude VonStroke is continuing the rollout of his new project Barclay Crenshaw, the Dirtybird boss’s given name. With this new alias set to drop a debut album in January, Crenshaw has followed up his first solo single “Sleepy Kids” with “The Gene Sequence.”
In keeping with the vibe established on “Sleepy Kids,” Crenshaw again moves away from the house direction that made VonStroke a superstar. The connective tissue between the two singles is apparent, as both possess a more subdued, somnambulant quality; where “Sleepy Kids” opts for a lighter, floating approach, however, “The Gene Sequence” can turn darker. The cascading arpeggios at first seem to lack any sort of darkness but after lulling the listener into comfort, Crenshaw opts to add dissonance before replacing them with spacey delayed elements and fuzzy basses. These attributes combine to make for a varied, captivating listen.
