Mozart had the best-selling CD of 2016

2016 has been a year chock-full of surprises. On the musical side of things, one of the most unexpected results is the biggest-selling CD of the year, Mozart 225, which achieved the distinction only five weeks after being released on October 28, 2016.

No one alive today has seen Mozart play a concert, as he departed from this life over two centuries ago. Yet, according to Universal Music Group, the Classical-era composer’s new box set Mozart 225: The New Complete Edition moved a whopping 1.25 million CDs in its first five weeks of sales.

How exactly this was possible becomes more apparent when considering the sheer size of the box set. The set contains 200 CDs, which, if listened to continuously, would play for 240 hours — 24 hours a day for about a week and a half. For anyone wanting to quickly become a Mozart completist, this is now possible with one purchase, as Mozart 225 contains every single work ever written by the legendary composer, performed by over 600 of the world’s best soloists and 60 orchestras, along with extensive additional reading.

Although when the 200 CDs inside the box are considered as one sale, the numbers don’t look quite as formidable — around 6,250 individual sales. Regardless, the incredible number of units moved goes to show how genius never goes out of style.
