Meet the counselors of Dirtybird Campout: Will Clarke
Dirtybird Campout, Southern California’s wildest adult summer camp, is preparing for its third installment this weekend, October 6-8. As has been established in its past editions, the campout will be packed with childhood nostalgia, scrumptious BBQ, and earth-shaking beats. Furthermore, this year will be its biggest yet, with a move to a larger venue at Lake San Antonio. Adding to the label’s nest of talent, acts like Amtrac, Coyu, and the Desert Hearts crew will be joining the house haven’s music lineup with more special guests still to be announced. Ahead of this weekend’s bonfire debauchery, we’ve teamed up with Dirtybird for an ongoing interview series spotlighting both the imprint’s own stars and the myriad of world-class artists on the concert’s bill.
Will Clarke, whose breakthrough single ‘Big Booty’ made him a prominent figure in tech house early on in his career, is one of Dirtybird’s prized new family members. His first single on the label came about a mere two years ago, yet the bearded British legend wasted no time in setting his roots firmly into the public psyche. He’s only continued to enamor his fans since then, boasting an array of chart toppers within a short span of time, and travelling around with his colleagues spreading the gospel of bouncy tech house to internationally. In addition, he stays on top of his game with the help of The Barber Shop, his radio show that sees him selecting new favorites that he rinses his set as well as recruiting well-known guests on mix duties.
As he has a natural ability to command any dance-floor he graces into movement, Clarke has been a key member of the flock of Dirtybird Campout Counselors since the festival began. The burgeoning talent therefore makes an excellent candidate to discuss his time at the campout, his musical background, and more.
How long have you been DJing for & how did you get your start?
So i guess I’ve been trying to DJ since i was 9 haha, i had worked out how to do it after i did a dj course when i was 13 in Bristol. Its kinda weird how i got in to it i just loved dance music and loved it so i wanted to be able to play it to people really.
What was your first label release?
Would you still play it? It was actually on my own label i started and the track was called ‘Bruno’ and fuckk no i will not be playing that ever again hahaha, i actually heard it the other day and cringed a little bit although its not as bad as some of the tracks I’ve released. I kind of wish i didn’t release anything until i was happy with the music but i guess thats the learning in the process.
What has been the biggest breakthrough of your career?
I honestly couldn’t say this, I would say the first breakthrough was when i released ‘Big Booty’ on Worthy’s label Anabatic that record got me my first support by bigger artist. Then the next biggest breakthrough was signing to Dirtybird.
If you could be another artist for a day, who would you pick?
Two people either Maxxi Jazz from Faithless or The Chemical Brothers.
What are you looking forward to most about Dirtybird Campout?
Everything… Its literally the most fun festival ever, also this year its at a new venue which I’m looking forward to supposedly its even more in the wilderness and thats exciting. Obviously playing there willbe amazing also getting to hang with the crew.
If you could recommend three artists to catch from the lineup, who would you pick?
The Martin Brothers Drum & Bass Set, Egyptian Lover also some artist called Will Clarke & Kill Frenzy are playing a back to back set… Hopeless promotion going on there.
Do you have a favorite (or funny) camping memory?
This isn’t funny however the best memory ever, a couple of times a year when i was a kid my parents, brother and sister would go camping in a place called exmoor back in the UK, we would make swings over rivers, go on bike rides, make camp fires sing songs and cook literally loved that. I would take that over going abroad any day of the week.
What are three essential items you wouldn’t go camping without?
Beard Comb, Moustache Wax, Water container.
