Selena Gomez received a kidney transplant from her best friend

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. While the question “what are friends for” would likely attract a variety and range of answers, Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa might provide an unexpected response: organ transplants.

Gomez took to Instagram to share a picture of herself and Raisa clad in hospital gowns, clasping hands across hospital beds. Cognizant that her fan base had taken note of her withdrawal from the music promotion scene during the summer, Gomez addressed fans’ questions as to why the chart topping pop star had stayed somewhat off the radar: “I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of,” Gomez writes.

The vocalist went on to detail her ongoing struggle with Lupus, a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks its own tissue and organs. “I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health.”

Gomez assured fans that her silence would not be prolonged, expressing her excitement to be able to resume “sharing” experiences with her fans upon a complete recovery. Gomez concluded her post by thanking Raisa. “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”
