These are the winners for the inaugural Electronic Music Awards

On Thursday, September 21, Los Angeles played host to the first-ever Electronic Music Awards. Taking place in Willow Studios, in the Arts District of Downtown LA, the event was touted as something of an ‘anti-awards show.’ There were no speeches, no celebrity monologues, no red carpet. Rather, the event was meant to embody the spirit of dance music itself: fun, light-hearted, and community-based.

As such, the actual event was more akin to a music festival than a traditional awards ceremony. Three stages pervaded the venue, playing host to electronic legends like Moby, Orbital, and Paul Oakenfold, as well as newer stars like Illenium, Autograf, and Kidnap Kid. There was an even an area dedicated specifically to Detroit, providing a platform for veterans like Juan Atkins and Robert Hood (as Floorplan) to perform.

While 1,800 attendees flooded the physical venue, the entire event was live streamed via Twitter to a global audience. Part of the broadcast, including Moby’s set, was streamed in 360 with the intention of releasing select VR recordings at a later date.

As for the actual awards, Bonobo took home a big win for ‘Album of the Year’ with Migration, while Eric Prydz was named ‘DJ of the Year.’ Cashmere Cat netted ‘Producer of the Year,’ while Alison Wonderland was awarded ‘New Artist of the Year.’ Moby was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award, while Juan Atkins received the Innovation Award.
