Updates to come as more details emerge. Tragic.
Update [2:25 PM EST 10/02/2017]: A previous version of this story suggested that Petty was confirmed dead. Though media outlets were reporting this was confirmed via Los Angeles Police Department information, that is apparently untrue.
LAPD has announced that despite reports from their office that Petty has passed away, the singer songwriter may still “clinging to life.” The police department confirmed via Twitter that information was passed “inadvertently” to media, but insists that they are unable to confirm details. Meanwhile outlets have begun to confirm the singer is still in the hospital, with reports of his death all citing the faulty LAPD information.
Updates will follow as information emerges.
