Dexter’s Beat Laboratory Vol. 30

Dexter’s Beat Laboratory is a weekly collection of songs from DA music editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter. With a taste that can only be described as eclectic — to say nothing of a name that lends itself to punnery — DA is happy to present a selection of tracks personally curated by Dexter for your listening pleasure.

Aylen‘s latest remix is a groovy take on Wuki and Wax Motif‘s “Buns.” He uses a deep bassline to cement the mood of the song: dark, but still funky. I haven’t been able to get this one out of my head.

The vocals in this recent Hegemon release hooked me right away. Ivan Reys, T.Wild and Stinie Whizz mesh together for a beautifully catchy, pop-leaning number. A soaring guitar that fades out into a piano melody toward the end wraps up the track in a captivating way.

French producer Dustycloud continues his tour de force with a new single, “Move.” He uses passionate old-school vocals to fortify this track, driving the chorus with a growling bassline. It’s another excellent addition to his growing discography.

Matrix & Futurebound continue to prove their ranking as two of drum & bass’ head honchos with each new release. This BBC Radio 1 premiere of “Mystery Machine” shows the pure energy and controlled chaos behind the UK duo’s music in the best way.

Ever hear a song and get completely mesmerized by the sheer power behind it? Element‘s new song, “Needles,” had me hooked from the first few seconds. The Brooklyn producer builds a foreboding atmosphere in the introduction, leading to a gut-wrenching drop. Gritty bass and a mysterious melody combine impeccably for three minutes the listener won’t soon forget.
