Gucci Mane ‘likes EDM,’ name drops Diplo in ‘The Autobiography of Gucci Mane’

Although Gucci Mane has cooked up a series of super collabs with fellow rap heavyweights like Migos, Drake, and Lil Wayne over the course of his career, Gucci Mane fans might be surprised to learn that the “Both” rapper’s affinity for music extends beyond the hip hop genre, as The Autobiography of Gucci Mane imparts.

Heralded as being “as wild, unpredictable, and fascinating as the man himself” by Complex, Gucci Mane’s autobiography ascended to the top of The New York Times’ bestseller list following its 2017 publication. The book traces Mane’s prolific career, from its earliest moments, Mane’s 2014 incarceration for felony firearm charges, and his 2016 release from prison.

While the work focuses primarily on hip hop and Gucci Mane’s association with the genre, The Autobiography of Gucci Mane details the rapper’s little known liking for electronic music. “I liked EDM,” Mane writes in one of the chapters, “The big beats, the lights at the shows, the way the crowd responded. It was a world away from the hood-ass clubs in Decatur I was used to, but I liked that my music was touching difference audiences. That was cool to me.”

Unexpected EDM/Diplo from r/EDM

Gucci Mane goes on to cite Diplo as “One of the DJs who was championing [his] music,” referencing Diplo’s creation of Free Gucci, in Mane’s own words, a “mixtape with EDM remixes of the best songs from the trilogy” that “took off.”

Perhaps one day, fans will see a Gucci Mane/Diplo collab born in the studio.
