Maceo Plex transcends genre with subterranean ‘Mutant 1’ EP

If Maceo Plex promises “techno mutations,” know that he’ll deliver.
Such runs deep on Eric Estornel’s latest release, the first of a new Mutant Series he’s dubbed, Mutant 1.
With a bellowing sense of urgency and driving complexity, Maceo mutilates the Maetrik electro he’s so highly revered for with a culmination of transcendent sci-fi soundscapes. Mutant 1 is an insatiable deliverance of distortion.
Lessening some of the ’90s rave aspects of electro as the EP moves from “Mutant DX” and into the more cinematic, explorative techno of “Mutant Moog” and then the sinister “Mutant Disco,” Maceo’s in top form. Listeners best heed warning — his greatness will surely only continue to emerge.
