Welcome back: Disclosure surprise releases new single, ‘Ultimatum’ [Stream]
A warm “welcome back” is in order, as Disclosure are back after a lengthy hiatus.
UK brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence have kept quiet since the release of their 2016 EP, Moog for Love. Disclosure forewarned fans of their ensuing absence from dance circles in 2017, citing their desire to “take some time out” and to “enjoy some much needed rest” in a letter addressed to fans. Many listeners speculated that a tight focus on the production of a third LP was also responsible for Disclosure’s disappearance, although the duo did not mention such an ambition in the letter.
Now, Disclosure’s silence has been shattered by the surprise release of “Ultimatum,” the DJ’s duo latest single. “Sorry it’s been awhile—we have been missing you all immensely, so we wanted to share with you something we’ve been working on now the sun is shining and the trees are green,” Disclosure said of the unexpected tune.
The track uses a sample from female vocalist, Fatoumata Diawara. The brothers discovered the sample when “digging through [Diawara’s] discography.” “[We] started messing around, having fun and experimenting with it. The result is our new song, ‘Ultimatum’” Disclosure said of the song.
A mid tempo number that cooly channels a jazzy aesthetic, “Ultimatum’s” temperate electronic elements effect a refined bliss when layered beneath Diawara’s sample. The tune evinces that Disclosure has been hard at work in the studio, and finally appears ready to cruise back into the electronic scene.
