Billie Eilish drops off her own take on Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’
In the wake of Drake‘s new double album, Scorpion, Billie Eilish has paid homage to the OVO figurehead with the release of a folk cover of Drake’s ubiquitous 2016 hit, “Hotline Bling.” The cover is a staple of Eilish’s setlist, simply just her and a ukulele on stage, a far cry from Drizzy’s sweeping meme-fuel music video, anchoring her rendition to her standalone vocals.
Her smokey vocals cast a breath of purity that’s made her one of the freshest emerging singer/songwriters currently on the scene. On the second verse, Eilish’s voice takes a backseat, invoking a fleeting, mysterious ambiance, allowing other elements of the production to take center stage. Celebrating Drizzy’s double LP, which broke the single day streaming record at 132 million streams on release day, the 16-year-old said on Twitter, “CONGRATS ON SCORPION DRAKE i luv u dad.”
