XXXTentacion breaks Spotify’s single-day global streaming record

Jahseh Onfroy, the polarizing rapper better known as XXXTentacion, has posthumously set a new record for single-day global streams on Spotify. According to newly published statistics, XXX’s  “SAD!” racked in nearly 10.4 million streams the day after the artist’s death, surpassing Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do,” which had held the record at 10.1 million streams since August 25, 2017.

Since the time of his passing, XXXTentacion’s ?, released in March, has spiked by 41,306 percent, while his debut album 17 has jumped by nearly 9,000 percent. XXX’s streaming feat is especially notable considering the artist’s music was removed from the platform’s playlists earlier in May, amid Spotify’s implementation of its hateful conduct policy, though they’ve since reversed the policy amidst considerable censorship backlash. Following Onfroy’s death, the streaming platform also featured a “RIP XXXTentacion” banner and a playlist of his music at the top of its browse page.

It’s worth noting that both X’s sales and iTunes chart placement have also spiked since his passing. The slain rapper’s music is currently topping iTunes’ Charts, with “SAD!” at No. 1, while ?’s song “Changes” is at No. 7. The entire album is now at No. 4 on the iTunes charts, while 17 is at No. 6.

The 20-year-old was fatally shot on June 18 after leaving a motorsport dealership in Florida and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. TMZ reports that police have arrested a 22-year-old suspect and charged him with first-degree murder.
