Will Ultra remain in Bayfront Park? Miami Commission to decide on July 26

Miami’s city commission will soon bring the uncertainty that surrounds Ultra Music Festival’s future at Bayfront Park to a close on July 26, the date that the commissioners will meet to determine whether the city of Miami will sign onto a five-year contract with UMF, thus allowing the festival to continue use of the park in its subsequent iterations.

The commission’s impending decision follows Miami Commissioner Frank Carollo’s May ultimatum to UMF: pay $2 million dollar annual payments to the agency that oversees Bayfront Park, or take Ultra elsewhere.

UMF’s potential to remain at Bayfront Park became precarious after The Downtown Neighbors Alliance (DNA) circulated a petition in July 2017 that called on Miami’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board to return access to Bayfront Park — DNA members’ “neighborhood park” — to downtown Miami locals.

“Since the beginning of 2017, Bayfront Park has been closed to the public or in a state of disrepair for over 100 days because of mega-concerts like Ultra and Rolling Loud,” the document read. The petition surpassed 1,100 signatures when it reached the hands of Carollo.
