Bassnectar continues to explore new sounds on ‘Reflective Part 3’ EP
Bassnectar releases the third installment of his Reflective EP series, a continued celebration of collaboration and experimentation through remixes and new original works. The bass deity released two pieces from the EP this month, “Heavyweight Sound” with Jentsen and RD and his remix of Rusko‘s “High.” New features on the EP include collaborations with Vindata, Gnar Gnar, Conrank, and an appearance by Bassnectar’s downtempo side project, Naux Faux, with Sayr.
The lead single from the EP is a remix of Lorin Ashton’s own “FSOSF,” originally from his 2007 Underground Communication album. Maintaining its celestial, delayed mallet melody, the track continues the narrative of exploration with complex sound design; a precursor to the rest of the project. “Whiplash” features London-based, vocal academic and beatboxer, Reeps One. The collaboration with Gnar Gnar stars the beatboxing vocals, which naturally ride a low end grittiness, showcasing Reeps One’s dual vocal frequency range.
“Easy Does It” hits the don of bass’ signature growling synths and bass right from the start. The track carries a melody from the beginning, juxtaposing a beautiful arrangement with heavy hardstyle flourishes. In contrast, “The Mothership” takes a jovial tone with an uplifting theme in a welcomed departure from Bassnecar’s characteristic griminess. The EP ends with a remix of “Enchanted” by Naux Faux off 2018’s Enchanted. The remix here is subtle, it’s an old-school use of the term remix, as in the song was literally re-mixed from the original rather than almost completely redone.
