Eli Nissan shows off production EDGE in ‘Late Romance’ EP
What began as a cutting-edge promoter in Belgium has expanded into a label of equal caliber. EDGE releases thus far have emulated the melodic, deep aesthetic of its past bookings, which have included the likes of John Digweed, Lee Burridge, Hernan Cattaneo, and more. With rising talents Navar and Mike Tohr as the label’s first signees, Eli Nissan joins the pack as its third release with a fresh new EP.
The producer, who’s appeared on prolific imprints like Lost&Found and Plattenbank, kicks Late Romance off with a winding “Old Glory Late Romance,” whose drawn out tones and curious melodies are evocative of staring into space. “Aquarius” maintains a steady pace as the EP’s middle track. Its riffs are subtly reminiscent of ones heard in 1980s synth pop and rock and roll. Perhaps this is a display of Nissan’s rock influence finding its way into the mix.
“Reloaded” is an electrifying closer that brings Late Romance to the next gear. It picks up nicely from the impactful ending “Aquarius” presented, beckoning the ears with lush percussion and locking in attention with even more intricate drum patterning as it unfolds. Whispers of synth return right as they seem to have disappeared for good, which strengthen the piece’s grasp. Late Romance is an EP that captures an artist hitting his stride, and a label who’s following along for the ride.
