Idris Elba and A$AP Rocky aiming to collaborate either on screen or in the booth

Idris Elba spoke with Matt Wilkinson on Beats 1 on August 28 to discuss his directorial debut, Yardie, coming out August 31 in the UK. In addressing the film’s influences, Elba noted the soundtrack that features a Skip Marley cover of “Johnny Was.” He then mentioned wanting to collaborate with A$AP Rocky.

“Yeah, A$AP and I, we share a mutual friend, Hector Delgado, who is his engineer and producer.” Elba told Wilkinson. “I love A$AP. He’s a good soul. And every time we meet each other we’re like, ‘Let’s work.’ Not necessarily music. He wants to act, he does act, I want to do music. So we just collaborate and we nearly made it happen . . . It hasn’t happened. Skepta is a good friend also, and they connect. So we’re just in a circle where there’s a possibility.”

The proven DJ, actor, and now director continued to speak about cross-genre collaboration and its seemingly simple process of reaching out to inner circles. A collaboration of any type with A$AP will continue to push cross-genre collaboration.
