Idris Elba opens with ‘Bond’ theme song at Elrow Town London, sparks casting speculation [Watch]

A remix of James Bond‘s 007 theme track, the opening song of Idris Elba‘s DJ set at Elrow Town London on August 19 reignited speculation that the versatile performer is in line to become the next Bond, following Daniel Craig’s departure from the role.

Speculation surrounding Elba’s potential to play the part originally swirled when Elba tweeted a selfie that bore the caption “My name is Eldra, Idris Elba,” a clear modification of Bond’s iconic catchphrase.

Elba later tweeted an image of Public Enemy, flanked by the group’s well known lyric, “Don’t believe the hype,” in what some perceived as a subtle denial of the suspicion that the tweet indicated Elba’s assumption of the role.

Elba’s tweets transpired during the same week in which Bond producer Barbara Broccoli supposedly stated that “it is time” to cast a “non-white actor” as Bond. Bond director Antoine Fuqua reportedly stated “Idris could do it if he was in shape…You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.” Fuqua’s commentary remains a tenuous indicator at best, however, given a remark from Fuqua’s representative. “He never had a conversation with Barbara about the franchise or about any casting,” the representative told The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s all made up stuff. Not sure how it got started.”

Whether Elba’s opener was a telling choice, or just in jest? Only time will tell.
