RL Grime’s ‘NOVA’ ranks as chart-topping success

Since its release at the end of July, RL Grime‘s sophomore album, NOVA, has been stirring up the electronic music sphere. The highly anticipated release has garnered tons of attention over the past few weeks — so much so that it’s landed the top spot on Billboard‘s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.

Since its release on July 27, NOVA has amassed 6,000 equivalent album units, with 1,000 in traditional album sales. Three NOVA tracks have also placed on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, including “Light Me Up” featuring Miguel and Julia Michaels, which debuts highest at No. 18. “I Wanna Know” featuring Daya and “Undo” with Jeremiah and Tory Lanez also made the chart.

While the album has been wowing fans and climbing the charts, the NOVA process was no easy one.

“I spent a lot of 2015-2017 depressed, anxious and unmotivated,” RL Grime shared in a Facebook post. “The music I was making for NOVA reflected that; it felt melancholy, but still hopeful. This album was made during a period in my life of growing up and learning how to deal with sadness, and overwhelming stress. I wanted my music to emerge from that darkness, but not to abandon the feelings that had shaped the project in the first place. I wanted to take the sounds that before seemed to emanate from somewhere down below, and bring them up into the skies, and into space. I wanted to find that same sort of power in something light.. ethereal but strong.”
