Alan Nieves fires off pumping house for Desert Hearts debut [EP Review]

Alan Nieves is a living embodiment of the phrase, “started off swinging.” After all, it’s not too often that one’s very first release makes it to the top of Beatport‘s overall chart. The New York native spent years honing his craft until he was ready to share his music with the world, and it seems the hard work paid off. Following releases on Kinetika, Deeperfect, Elrow, and Lapsus, Nieves has officially made his debut on Desert Hearts Recordings.

The pair-up between the two was natural. Thanks to his work behind the decks as a regular at Brooklyn’s famed Output club and his own event series, Nieves had struck up a relationship with the Desert Hearts crew that later transformed into a close friendship. What has resulted is a delightfully smooth two-tracker titled Empty Lights.

Empty Lights’ eponymous opener is subtle in tone, yet its upward synth progressions, encouraging vocals, and nuanced grooves on the low-end translate to a dancefloor destroyer. “Contigo” continues this motif, yet its focus on intricate drum patterning and a strong bassline allow for a more after-hours feel. It’s clear Nieves knows how to work his crowds — either through DJing or his productions — and such proven success early on indicates he’s leading the charge in original tech house.
