Brasstracks pay homage to Kendrick Lamar with ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’ medley

Many were inspired by the release of Kendrick Lamar‘s second studio album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, in 2012. Among those still inspired six years later are New York duo Brasstracks, who’ve been stunning the world with their horn-infused takes on hit tracks like Drake‘s “In My Feelings,” along with their own hip-hop and R&B originals they’ve recently taken on the road.

Ivan Jackson and Conor Rayne embarked on their debut headlining tour earlier this year and were listening to Lamar’s full discography while on the road. Remarking that the album that still resonates the most with them is Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Jackson and Rayne had the idea to make an ode to the album by putting a medley together.

“Good Kid, Brass City” was released on October 22 in its eight-minute entirety and has been met with enthusiasm by fans who’ve embraced the medley’s creative nostalgia.

“Most of the songs on the project have a really healthy relationship between jazz and hip-hop,” the duo said of their medley. “It was pretty easy for us as jazz musicians turned hip-hop producers, to go into the studio with all of our friends and make some magic happen based on what Kendrick did in 2012. This was honestly just fun for us. If anybody else really digs it, Kendrick hears it or something crazy, that’s just a bonus. Because this was an amazing project for us to do.”
